Dalai Lama (the 14th Dalai Lama) is the Famous Tibetan Buddhist Monk who was rewarded with Nobel Peace Prize in the year 1989. Dalai Lama has traveled all over the world, spreading peace and bringing tranquility to the hearts of millions. Dalai Lama is worshiped by many Buddhist believers because of his intelligence, knowledge, and power to bring peace to the world.
However recently, problems rose among India and China considering Dalai Lama as the subject of the conundrum. When India permitted Dalai Lama to visit an important Sangdok Palri Monastery located at a disputed Himalayan Province, China claimed that India’s move has risked there position of being an ally in the future. China later on quoted that the Spiritual leader’s trip will “severely hurt” the relationships of Asian unions.
Since the time of Tibetan uprising in 1959, Dalai Lama has lived in India as a refugee. Recently, the spiritual Monk was on an eighty days tour to Arunachal Pradesh which Beijing claims as their province since 1959. Arunachal Pradesh has always been a sacred pilgrimage place for Buddhists. Hence, Dalai Lama has visited this region almost six times now, which makes this place more spiritual and sacred. Last time when Dalai Lama visited Arunachal Pradesh province in the year 2009 China rose severe objections and issues regarding his pilgrimage tour.
As a result of the objection, Beijing beckoned Vijay Gokhale, India’s ambassador to China for an objection reprimand about the pilgrimage trip to Arunachal Pradesh. China clearly expressed their displeasure publicly to the media.
The reason of conundrum between India and China:
Several issues arose between India and china regarding Dalai Lama’s pilgrimage visit. China even did not hesitate to quote that India is using Dalai Lama for their own good and forgetting about the bonding that Asian countries have among themselves. The issues and reason of the conundrum created between India and China are as follows:
- Dalai Lama’s recent visit to the Arunachal Pradesh has taught the eyes of China in a negative way and rose different issues between the two countries.
- Since 1959, Beijing is of the opinion that Arunachal Pradesh belongs to their province. Several uprisings happened between the countries during that time.
- Hua Chunying, the foreign minister of China declared to the media that India’s decision to allow Dalai Lama to visit the disputed area of Arunachal Pradesh for a pilgrimage visit has severely damaged the India-China relationship.
- This is Dalai Lama’s seventh Visit to Arunachal Pradesh. According to India’s counterpart on the issue raised by china, India Government claimed that no one has the right to stop a religious Monk to visit a pilgrimage place especially when his sole motive is religion. The last six visit of Dalai Lama though raised some conflicts between India and China, in no way, India-China relationship was hampered like it is at this time.
Arunachal Pradesh is a pivotal part of India and it strategically shares its boundaries with China, Myanmar and Bhutan. Dalai lama being the religious head has every right to visit any country which he likes and China should have no qualms regarding that. It would be really naive from China’s part if China will stall talk with India as it will affect India ties with China.
