How Do I Make A Wired Ad-hoc Network Between My Computer And Xbox 360?

I’m very tech savvy, but not so much in networking. Can I please have a “click through click” description of how to set up a wired ad-hoc network. I’m only doing this because the system fails the MTU test when connecting to Xbox Live when I hook the ethernet directly from the Xbox to the gateway.
