I need help with the search keywords affiliate marketing!?

Ok here is problemet.Jeg was told that when sniffing out the competition, it is useful to put a certain keyword in quotes and see how many results they are seeing Google.de supposed to test how many lines are optimized for end right? So why is it that I can enter a single term to only return results in google 500 -1000?
