<p>It used to be you had to know how to write code if you wanted to make a website. Eventually WYSIWYG editors came along to make things much easier, but knowing some code was necessary for all by the simplest sites. Now <em>WordPress</em> (commonly abbreviated as WP) has come along and changed the playing field. Those who want to run a business online refer to it as WordPress marketing, however, this is a bit of a misnomer unless they are actually working to promote WordPress itself. But for the sake of simplicity, when we use that term we will be using it in the more popular sense.</p>
<p>WordPress was originally designed as a blogging platform, and many people still use it that way. There are also a lot of people, especially marketers, who use WP as the foundation for a website that sells things. There are also hybrid sites that combine the best of both worlds. They sort of look like blogs, but they are also set up to make money. </p>
<p>WordPress marketing has a lot to do with setting up your site properly. Search engine optimization (SEO) is one of the things that is easy to do with WP. There are several plugins available that can further boost your SEO results. These make your WordPress pages more friendly to the search engines and will raise you in the rankings if you use them properly. </p>
<p>You still need to do many of the same things you would have to do on any webpage. You need to have content that draws people in, and attracts the right kind of attention from the search engines. Links play a big part in SEO; this includes external and internal links. External links are those that are placed on another site. You could actually set up many free WordPress sites and work in links back to your main page. This is a WordPress marketing strategy that many people use successfully.</p>
<p>Internal links work in a different way. These are the links on your site that link to other part of your site (either the same page, or other pages). This linking structure makes a huge difference, and knowing how to set it all up can get a bit confusing. You need to make sure you have a separate page for each piece of keyword-targeted content, and every page should have links to your main pages, as well as any other pages you&#8217;re trying to rank for. </p>
<p>If all of that sounds confusing, that&#8217;s because it is&#8230;or at least it was when you had to hand code everything. You would have to chart everything out and hope you got it right. No need to worry though, there are WP plugins that make most of this virtually automatic. You may have to do set some initial settings and make sure you upgrade as needed, but that&#8217;s about it. With all it has going for it, it&#8217;s no surprise that more and more savvy website owners are choosing WordPress marketing as a major part of their business.</p>

<p>One of the best things you can use for the success of your online business is WordPress marketing. WordPress got its start in 2003, and was used mainly by bloggers. Since that time it has become one of the most popular tools for building a website. Sure, bloggers still use it, but so do a growing number of website owners.  </p>
<p>WordPress has changed internet marketing by making it easier for people to quickly set up websites. The WordPress platform is free and easy to install. You don&#8217;t need to know any coding to be able to use it, though some knowledge of CSS will allow you to make alterations to your site. However, there are so many themes (website designs) and plugins (add-ons that do different things) for WordPress that you may not ever need to go into the CSS anyway.</p>
<p>One of the main reasons for the success of WordPress is that it is open source. This means anyone can access the source code and develop products for WordPress. So, instead of just relying on the WordPress development team to figure out what users want, the users themselves can decide, and then create the themes and plugins that fit their needs. </p>
<p>The flexibility of WordPress marketing makes it an easy choice for setting up a website. Just about anything you need for marketing purposes can be added on to the basic installation. Plugins are easy to find, and easy to install. Once installed you need to activate them, but most plugins only require you to click a button for activation. There are some that require you to get an activation key, but this is also a simple process.</p>
<p>Even though it&#8217;s open source, not all themes and plugins are free. There&#8217;s nothing wrong with someone wanting to make something for all of the time and effort they put in to creating a good product, so don&#8217;t assume everything will be free. Of course, being in business you understand that no money is made until something is sold. And, just as you would like people to send you money if you provide something of value to them; so too should you be willing to make a small investment for something of value to you. </p>
<p>There are a few basic types of plugins you should have for WordPress marketing. The most important is getting a security plugin. Unfortunately, because WordPress is so popular, it makes sites using it a popular target for hackers. The good news is that there are plenty of plugins that cut off the typical exploits used by hackers. Search engine optimization (SEO) plugins are also a good idea as they will help your site look more attractive to the search engines; and thereby&#8211;in theory&#8211;increase your rankings when people are searching. The other type of plugins you will want to look into are those designed for e-commerce. Simply put, these are plugins that make it easier for you to sell whatever it is that you&#8217;re offering.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s a fair statement to say that most people think of WordPress (commonly abbreviated as WP) as being primarily a blogging platform. And while it is true that it works quite well for that; <u>understanding</u> WordPress means having a better idea of all it can do.  Here are a few things that make it an ideal choice for many different types of sites. </p>
<p>Flexibility is one of the most attractive features of the WordPress platform. You can set up WP as a blog, to share content, as a membership site, or to sell products and services. Because it was originally set up for blogging, it&#8217;s really easy to allow your customers to share comments with you; however, you can just as easily turn this feature off if you like. The amount of customizing that can be done is nearly endless. Beginners can quickly make some basic changes to make their site unique, but WordPress is also robust enough to allow advanced users to make even more changes. Much of this can be done through the dashboard, but more intricate changes will require changing the code; which brings us to the next point&#8230;</p>
<p>The WordPress community is at the heart of what makes everything else work so well. This is due, in large part, to the fact that WP is open source. That means anybody can develop add-ons (called plugins), themes (site designs) and other things that make WordPress useful for webmasters. Also, if you need to know how to do something, you can usually find the answer quite quickly. <em>Understanding</em> WordPress means understanding the large community that not only uses it, but contributes to it as well.</p>
<p>Themes can be thought of as skins that make your site look different. However, that description is a bit simplistic as themes are more than just graphics. Themes cover the entire look of your site when using WP. Graphics will be a big part of it, but fonts, links, pages, layout and more can all be changed to fit the theme. All of this is done automatically when you download and install the theme. However, you still have the flexibility, and can alter the theme as needed for your purposes.</p>
<p>Plugins go hand-in-hand with themes when it comes to customizing WordPress. There are all kinds of plugins; some are nothing more than window dressing, while others are essential. If you want to use WP to earn money, then you can get plugins to help you build a mailing list, generate affiliate links, and sell any number of products. There are also security plugins that will keep your site from getting hacked. Another popular type of plugin amongst internet marketers is the membership plugin. These plugins let you limit access to your site to paying members (or anyone with the right password). </p>
<p>The best thing about WordPress is that it&#8217;s free to download and install. Many of the themes and plugins are also free. However, there are paid options as well. If a paid option fits what you&#8217;re looking for, then by all means&#8230;get it. Consider it an investment in the success of your business.</p>

<p>No matter what you have to offer, you should be able to find a forum on just about any topic. You can easily find them by going to your favorite search engine and searching for the name of the topic, followed by the word &#8216;forum&#8217; or &#8216;forums&#8217;. If you were selling sleeping bags, then you could try &#8220;sleeping bag forum&#8221; or &#8220;camping forums&#8221;. Any group of people that would have a direct interest in your offer should be considered; however you don&#8217;t want to be to broad otherwise you may end up wasting your time. </p>
<p>The next step is to sign up at the forums you wish to become a member of. Before you submit your registration info, be sure to read all of the rules carefully. Different forums have different rules, and it&#8217;s your responsibility to know and follow them. Once you are registered, there may be another set of rules for you to read; again, make sure you do.</p>
<p>Fill in your profile as completely as possible, but don&#8217;t make everything about your offer. You want people to think of you as a fellow member of the forum, and not as someone who is there for the sole purpose of selling. You don&#8217;t have to completely hide it, nor should you. The key is to strike the right balance of letting people know you have something they may want and letting them know that you&#8217;re one of them.</p>

<p>Some forums have separate sections set aside for promoting products and services. There are often requirements, so be sure you know what they are. For example, you may need to have 50 posts, pay a small fee, and post in the proper section. The other thing most forums allow is what&#8217;s known as a signature link. This is a default section placed at the end of every post you make. You can usually place your offer there; however, you still need to follow all of the rules associated with placing sig links.</p>

<p>There are several different ways that people use to make money online. One that a lot of people use successfully is forum marketing. Using this method gives you as an internet marketer a way to connect with the people who are likely to be the most interested in your offer. That&#8217;s the promise, anyway; however, just like any other online business method, there are some pros and cons that you should be aware of.</p>
<p>PRO: Discover the wants and needs of your market. Forums are places where people with the same interests meet to exchange ideas. This is done through posting in the forum. You can use this to your advantage. Why? Because you will see exactly what problems people are having&#8230;and then you can offer a viable solution. You will find out what has them excited right now, what they&#8217;re buzzing about&#8230;and you can make a product that feeds into that buzz. You need to pay attention, but if you do it right it can pay off in a big way.</p>
<p>PRO: Interacting with your target market. Forum marketing isn&#8217;t simply posting your offer every chance you get. Instead, you need to interact with members of the forum and become a contributing member of the community. In fact, a lot of forums have strict rules about marketing, so you need to make sure you understand and follow them. Either way, the ability to interact directly with your market is a definite plus.</p>
<p>PRO: Achieving expert status. As you interact in the forum, people will start to develop opinions of you. Now, you shouldnt go in trying please everybody because that&#8217;s not the point. However, if you are able to demonstrate your knowledge, and are an active member then you just may achieve expert status. You can&#8217;t over-estimate how important doing this can be; it can virtually guarantee sales every time you have something new to offer.</p>
<p>CON: It takes time. As you may have figured out, forum marketing isn&#8217;t the kind of thing you can do overnight. It will take an investment of time to do it right, but the good news is that the payoff for that investment can be huge. Don&#8217;t rush into it and pay attention to how people behave on the forum.</p>
<p>CON: Becoming accepted isn&#8217;t as easy as some people would like you to believe. The one variable that is always present on any forum is people. You can never be entirely sure how they will react to you, and they may test all newcomers to make sure they share the same interests. If you are there for the long haul, then stick it out and you will be the better for it.</p>
<p>Of course, those few cons are easy to get around with a bit of time and the right attitude. Don&#8217;t let them stop you from forum marketing because it not only works, but works really well. You can discover the wants and needs of your market, interact with them, and may even become a recognized expert in the process.</p>

<p>Traditional advertisers now understand just how much of an impact this &#8220;internet marketing thing&#8221; has on their advertising business. The fact that the collective attention span is getting shorter and shorter; and that the economy isn&#8217;t exactly going gangbusters, has also put them in a tough situation. We&#8217;ll take a quick look at history, and then see how you can apply the lessons to your current marketing efforts.</p>
<p>The number of people online is still growing, and every time somebody is online, it means that they are not being exposed to traditional forms of advertising. It would seem logical that advertising firms would then simply move some of their advertising from one medium and put it on the internet.</p>
<p>In fact, a lot of advertisers tried doing that in the early days of the internet. For a while, it looked as though you could put anything online and it would bring back a high return on the marketing investment. It was crazy in a way, and the boom garnered a lot of attention; causing even more money to be invested in online advertising.</p>
<p>Soon, web properties were worth a lot of money. To put it another way, many of them were seriously over-valued. This false sense of worth made people in the advertising business pay top dollar to advertise on these websites, and things were looking good. Then came the crash.</p>
<p>The people involved made some major errors in judgment, but such errors are always easier to spot many years later, aren&#8217;t they? First, they needed to be more risk-averse considering that it was still a new technology. While it seemed to be exploding in popularity at the time, there were just too many unknowns. Second, they didn&#8217;t understand the mindset of the people using the internet.</p>
<p>It was the lack of understanding that caused the biggest problem. See, what the advertising business failed to realize was that their internet marketing had to appeal to the people who were online. Some advertisers tried to transport existing campaigns to the online environment&#8230;and failed miserably; while others tried to sound &#8220;hip&#8221;, but came across as trying too hard&#8230;and failed miserably. To be fair, there were some advertisers who understood, and those are the same ones who weathered the fallout.</p>
<p>So, what can we learn from all of this? The main lesson is that the advertising business and internet marketing are not synonymous. This has advantages and disadvantages, but understanding the differences is the key to success.</p>
<p>The fact that traditional advertising doesn&#8217;t transpose to the web doesn&#8217;t mean advertising can&#8217;t be done successfully. Perhaps a regular television commercial or standard print ad won&#8217;t work online, but they can be tweaked in a way that draws internet users in and makes them hungry to buy. Another thing to consider is that people use credit cards when buying online, which makes upsells that much easier. Once you understand the market, then you will be able to tap into that market; and that holds true in both the advertising business and internet marketing.</p>

<p>It can be very time consuming to build backlinks to your website.  You spend so much time asking owners of other sites if you can add a link to their site, it is a time consuming process and a very tedious one.  Surely there must be an easier way!  </p>
<p>First you want to find your target websites and then review them and decide whether the site is worth adding to yours.  If you decide it is then you contact the site owner and send a request to them to use their link.  You wait for their reply before you can proceed further.  Then you can add their link to your site and hope that they return the favor and add your link to their site.  Let&#8217;s make the whole link building process easier.</p>
<p>Here is a ten step strategy that you can use to make this process a little easier. </p>
<p>1. Join an online forum and actively participate in the forum.  Make yourself known as someone that provides good quality information and as an expert in your field.  When people admire you and always provide informative posts, they will want to link to your website.  When you build strong relationships with forum members then there is a good chance that they will link to your business website.</p>
<p>2. Add a note on your website that you want links to your site.  You can ask visitors to link to your site in exchange for including a link to their site on your website.  You can leave a box for them to enter their website details.  This way you will have people contacting you for the link exchange instead of you looking for and contacting website owners.</p>
<p>3. Publish a newsletter regularly and include the newsletter content on your website.  Within the newsletter include a statement like &#8216;if you enjoy this newsletter please include a link on your website&#8217;.  Remember to include the URL in that statement.</p>
<p>4. Do some article marketing and every time that you publish an article in an article directory you can include a link to your site.  There are many article directories on the internet that allow you to include a link to your site on each article that you submit so this is a great way to build backlinks.</p>
<p>5. Always have well written content on your website and in the articles that you submit to article directories.  If you have good quality content then other people may publish your article on their website with a link pointing back to your site.</p>
<p>6. Do some guest blog posting on other sites within your niche.  Many blog owners will allow you to make a guest post on their blog and in return you get to include a link to your website.  This is beneficial to you both as they get good content for their blog and you get a backlink.</p>
<p>7. Submit your website to site directories.  There are paid and free options for submitting your website to directories and the more directories you submit to the more backlinks you are building.</p>
<p>8. Make comment on other blogs within your niche.  Most blogs these days allow you to include a link with your comment.  Always leave comments that relate to the blog post otherwise your comment may be seen as spam and be deleted.</p>
<p>9. Use web 2.0 sites like Squidoo and Hubpages to build backlinks to your site.  You can create a Squidoo lens or Hubpage on your niche and include a link back to your website.</p>
<p>10. Put a link in your forum signature pointing back to your website.  If you are an active forum member then you can have a link to your site in your signature and every time you make a post on the forum you will gain a backlink to your site.</p>
<p>These are ten simple ways to build backlinks to your website that are much easier than requesting link exchanges from other website owners.</p>
